Philadelphia, December 12, 1803. If you can, without inconvenience, let me know how James stands as a midshipman, I wish you would do it. Having lost a brother, a son, and two nephews in the service, I have some right to expect James will not be neglected. Not knowing what is the precise object of his father's inquiries, my communication may not afford the expected explanations.
