[Footnote 2: San Bartolomé--'St. Bartholomew,' one of the twelve
apostles, deemed by some to be identical with Nathanael. "Little is
known of his work. According to tradition he preached in various
parts of Asia, and was flayed alive and then crucified, head
downward, at Albanopolis in Armenia. His memory is celebrated in the
Roman Catholic church on August 24." _Century Dict._ In popular
superstition St. Bartholomew is supposed to have had particular
power over the devil, and prayers to this saint are thought to be
specially efficacious against the wiles of the evil one. For a
